Caregiver and client sharing a heartfelt moment on a boat, highlighting compassionate and personalised care.

Human beings, by nature, are a social species. While some individuals enjoy solitude (myself included), extended periods without social interaction can strain both mental and physical well-being.

I remember this all too well from a few years ago when I was 21 weeks pregnant and broke my ankle. It wasn’t a simple break — it was a Trimalleolar fracture, meaning all three bones in my ankle were broken, along with a dislocation.

I spent about a week in the hospital, feeling vulnerable and overwhelmed. One memory stands out: a particularly compassionate nurse who attended to me on the first day after my operation. She clearly loved her job. She helped me shower using a chair and, during this time, engaged me in light-hearted conversations about my family, my life, and even how the accident happened. I reciprocated by asking about her nursing career. Afterward, I felt not only physically clean but emotionally supported. Although I didn’t see anyone else that day and preferred to rest, her kindness stayed with me.

The following day, another nurse performed the same duty. She was polite and professional, yet the experience felt entirely different. The conversations were just as superficial, but it was clear that, for her, this was a task, not a passion. While she wasn’t unpleasant, she didn’t evoke the same sense of care and connection as the first nurse.

This contrast underscores why finding the right person to provide care is so vital. When we seek support for ourselves or loved ones at home, we need someone who genuinely wants to be there — someone who will wake up an hour earlier to help another person start their day with dignity and compassion. This kind of person cannot be fully understood through a CV or application form alone.
